Resources for Common Core Standards and Adult Education
I recently attended an adult education conference where the topic of Common Core Standards generated a lot of discussion. Participants freely shared some of their favorite online resources to support not only Common Core Standards, but also college and career readiness. Below are links to some of the favorites:

Hashtags for Adult Educators
Do you ever feel like Donkey in the first Shrek movie, wanting to yell, "Pick me! Pick me!" when it comes to being an included adult educator or adult education advocate on Twitter? I know I do. Just in the last few days, I've seen several blogs and articles with titles such as The 20 Hottest Hashtags for Teachers on Twitter, Educational Hashtags on Twitter and - one of the most recent - 300+ Educational Twitter Hashtags Being Used Right Now.
Wouldn't you think that in a list of over 300 hashtags, there would be at least one for adult educators? Sadly, not the case. Ditto for the 20 Hottest Hashtags and Educational Hashtags articles.
So, instead of wasting energy fussing about this, I decided to put together my own list of Helpful Hashtags for Adult Educators. Here are my top seven hashtag picks (and the ones I use on a daily or almost daily basis) for useful and relevant information for teachers and administrators in the adult education field:
1. #adulted
2. #adultliteracy
3. #adultesl
4. #andragogy
5. #edtech
6. #elearning
7. #mlearning
The last three hashtags include information about technology topics such as online and blended learning and mobile technology in the classroom.
What are your 'go to' Twitter hashtags for adult education?

The California Consortium for Independent Study (CCIS) held its Fall Conference in Anaheim on November 18-19, 2013. According to conference organizers, this was one of the most well-attended events to date with over 400 participants. There were a variety of workshops ranging from blended instruction to effective independent study practices.
It was my priviledge to share some engaging online resources to supplement curriculum for independent study students. You can access my presentation titled, "Using Mulitmedia to Engage Learners (with free and fun resources!) as well as the handout that lists all the links featured in the presentation.
I would like to thank the conference organizers and in particular Carol Abbott, Marcia Abrahamsen, and Chiem-Seng Yaangh for inviting me to present to such an amazing group of dedicated, enthusiastic and caring educators.

The California Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (CATESOL) annual conference was held in San Diego from October 24-27, 2013. Over 1,000 attendees were able to select from a wide variety of high-quality sessions and hands-on workshops. One of the highlights for me was a workshop offered by my OTAN colleague, Branka Marceta. She highlighted frameworks for K-12 and adult education that had a strong technology focus. Workshop attendees reviewed the frameworks and then came up with ways to effectively incorporate technology with specific student groups.
Some of the sites Branka used in her workshop included Poll Everywhere, Voki, and USA Learns. To see her complete presentation outline, visit http://webtwopointohinadulted.wikispaces.com/CATESOL+2013
This was my first time attending CATESOL, and I look forward to future events!

Community College and ROI
According to a recent report from The American Institutes of Research and Nexus Research and Policy Center released earlier this month, California receives an average rate of return of $86,257 for every student who earns an associate’s degree and doesn’t go on for a higher degree over the course of his or her career.
California gets the best return on its investment in community colleges, compared to other states. View the entire EdSource article here: http://tinyurl.com/n95w2aj
